Lemongrass Ragu Lasagna

Name me one person who doesn’t enjoy the decadence that is a creamy, cheesy, meaty mouthful of lasagna! For Mother’s Day this year, and seeing as we’re all staying home in these trying times, I decided to put in some elbow grease and prepare an amazing lasagna from scratch. I don’t want to bore you with some long-winded story like some food blogs do, because I can’t wait to share this recipe with you.

Rinse @ Bandar Sri Damansara, KL

Rinse is one of those cafes that you probably have heard of by now. They serve a variety of rice bowls and pastas, but I think their specialties are the low-carb options for the health nut and their burnt cheesecakes (there was a sign outside saying that it was awarded with the top cheesecake award or something).

Bao-Tea-Ful @ Brasserie25, Hotel Stripes KL; End of Hiatus!

Hello dear readers! At long last I’ve come back from my long hiatus; I just didn’t have much personal time to write and manage this page since my internship started. Anyway, I’m back now and you can look forward to regular content again!

This weekend, Yik and I went to Hotel Stripes for their Bao-Tea-Ful afternoon tea promo. To be honest, the hotel was so difficult to reach even with on-phone navigation and I got annoyed that I had to make so many wrong turns to get there. The valet service is quite pricey but there’s a cheaper open air car park about a 3 minute-walk away!

蜀国印象·火锅 Shu Guo Yin Xiang Hot Pot @ Sunway Velocity, KL

I used to be that one person in my family that doesn’t like spicy food. Oh how the tables have turned in the past few years, particularly since my introduction to mala. And suddenly I constantly want to eat spicy and numbing hotpot, if only my budget (and gastrointestinal health) will allow for such indulgence.

Anyway, after surveying a couple of the Chinese hotpot restaurants at Sunway Velocity (there really are so many there it’s like a mini Sichuan), the two of us decided on 蜀国印象 · 火锅 and it seemed like it was the most popular one during lunch time, with a full house compared to the relatively quiet ones. This is what we had!

The Great Boba Hunt

I’m pretty sure everybody who has a social media account knows about or wonders about why there are like a million boba shops popping up like mushrooms after a storm. I was at first hesitant on joining the craze because who would pay 15 bucks for a cup of boba when I could get something similar for half the price at Tealive/Chatime/the other OG milk tea chains?

Eventually, I gave in because I’m a victim of peer pressure and I was actually quite pleasantly surprised at how nice the drinks were, and that they were sufficient as a whole dessert (considering we pay upwards of 10 bucks for dessert these days, I think it’s justified). Some of these drinks are sweet, like really really sweet, so consume in moderation ‘cos diabetes ain’t fun, y’all.

Anyway, here is my current ranking of brown sugar boba milks from a few different chains in PJ/KL. [Disclaimer: I’m only including the items that are brown sugar pearls in milk, and not milk tea or any of their other products] This post will be updated down the line, should I have tried other brands.

Soon Heng Social Club

Wow, I can’t remember when was the last time I updated this page but hello everyone I’m back after a long hiatus! What better way to make a comeback than to talk about this fantastic experience I had last week?

I came across Soon Heng Social Club (SHSC) on Instagram, which is my preferred social media to keep updated with restaurants, food options and cooking inspiration (@jumineats).

Glazed Lemon Poppy Seed Loaf (Recipe)

Baking has become my go-to de-stressing method these days, though I think it’s a double-edged blade. On one hand I am relaxed, but on the other I get fatter. ANYWAY, this cake/quick bread is one of the best things that has ever come out of my oven.

Honestly, lemon is one of the flavours I cannot live without. Lemon tart, lemon curd, lemon cookies, lemon sorbet, lemon chicken, lemon tea… you name it. But this! THIS CAKE I WANT TO MAKE AGAIN AND AGAIN!

This cake is so moist, with a beautiful crust. And that lemon glaze OMG! Perfect with a hot cup of coffee or tea. I really hope you give this one a go.

Basque Burnt Cheesecake (Recipe)

So, who doesn’t like a good ol’ burnt cheesecake these days huh? It’s literally in all the cafes across the city, and not all of them are necessarily delicious (plus they charge a bomb for each slice). I’ve been meaning to attempt it for a while now, as seen by the almost-expiring blocks of cream cheese sitting in the fridge since Christmas, and so I finally did it.

I did some research on the ingredients, ratios and techniques to bake a good burnt cheesecake (ha, never thought “good” and “burnt” would appear in a sentence together). So, I scaled the recipe down because I didn’t have that much cream laying around. Cream is expensive here lol. ANYWAY, I guess this is where my science degree came in handy: Doing math and calculating the amounts of ingredients I needed.
